In your introductory email - you say you hate writing. You raise an interesting question about the role of text for a visual artist. In your blog http://www.kleinershames.blogspot.com/ I notice that your work is without text, which was a surprise for someone I was told was a graffitti artist and my automatic assumption from that limited description is that it would be text based.

I hope we will find a way to explore our mentoring through the visual image. To start us off your introductory text as a wordle

Mentoring together

I like the idea of using a blog as a tool to mentor and share ideas. I would like to use this as well as email and telephone conversations. I also like to meet up a few times at 'inspirational places' chosen by my mentees so that I can get to know them better.

This blog can be used, as you can already see, to create a space where we see our own creative learning in action. We can also share our learning with others. I prefer to work visually so where ever possible we will find interesting and stimulating images to begin our conversations.

I have chosen this image to describe my interest in being a mentor on the OYAP

Young Creative Leaders Training Programme

OYAP Trust has developed an exciting new programme for entrepreneurial artists and artist managers who are setting out on their careers in the creative industries. During the programme our Young Leaders will undertake an intensive course of formal training in career development, working in schools, self-employment, understanding the wider cultural landscape, arts project management, fundraising and working with young people. Alongside the core training a professional mentor will work on a one to one basis offering support and guidance as these emerging cultural leaders shape their careers in the arts.

I am pleased to be able to offer myself up as a mentor to young artists on this programme

As there are so many possibilities the best thing to start with are the items we are interested in. We should aim to get as many items as we can for free and should spend no more than ten pounds on everything (our challenge). Once we have collected our items we should post them to the blog with drawings that we have made of the possible combinations. When we have this we will know more about our shapes and weights and see what might occur to us about how to bring together into a mobile. the objects themselves might give us clues.

THE PINK HOTEL

We renamed the street after our favourite songs
and sat on the sun-deck of the Pink Hotel
watching drivers get first confused, then angry,
then tearing their maps into bite-sized pieces.

A waiter frisked us for prohibited substances.
Small children approached in ones and twos
and shyly asked who wrote the lyrics
of the road to the cottage hospital.

It dawned upon us we were running late,
and as we hurried along to the artist's studio
the children began repainting the hotel
in greens and browns, a precautionary measure.

We posed naked for statues of ourselves.
We woke late, lifelike but blanketed by snow
on which a most delicate crust
had formed overnight.

I think now we need to explore more about mobiles.

What types of supports does it need?

How would you attatch things onto it?

What sort of shapes would the strings or wire make and what position?

Will it be big or small?

What equipment would we need?

What is the structure?

We have till the beginning of July when I break up for summer holidays.

In this time we can probably work on this about once a week.

We should start to create the mobile quite soon so as it will be ready for July.

I have had some new ideas, in a magazine last week I was flicking through a fashion magazine, I saw a mobile with shoes on it. My idea was we could visit charity shops and buy handbags, shoes, purses and other fashion accesories that we could stick on our mobiles. I also think we should each have different ideas of what to do. For example we each have a theme that is different.

I have learnt that you can do alot with small things that do not sound interesting at all.

I have learnt that you can explore everything in lots of detail.

I have learnt that a texture can make a difference and there are so many.

REFLECTING

Hannah, before we work on the next instruction we both need to reflect on what we have learned so far. We also need to set out some guidelines for working on your project. We need to know how much time we can spend each week, when we need to produce something and when the project ends (perhaps it doesn't - it might just have stopping off points along the way).

I have learned that I would like to carry out the instructions that you set as well as the ones I set for you.

I have learned that I like not knowing what will happen next. I like to be inspired by new ways of thinking.

I have learned that I need to know more about what you want in terms of timing for this project (because my work is very open ended which suits me but might not suit you). I think we should agree a timescale for each instruction and we can only do this if we know when you need to finish for your award.

Linda - I have taken pictures of 10 things beginning with S and annalysed their materials.

Soap Bottle; made out of- plastic. Size - 3 x 7". Texture - Sticky, hard, smooth, curvy.

Statue/Sculpture; made out of - stone. Size - 2 x 6.4". Texture - sharp on backs of people and sides, smooth, thin, circular, flat on bottom.

Sock; made out of - cotton. Size - 3 x 12". Texture - soft, bumpy, flexible, stretchy.

Sewing box; made out of - padding, material. Size - 7 x 9.5 x 5". Texture - padded on lid, hard on light blue parts, solid, light on flowy parts round edge.

Saucepan; made out of - steel?, wood, metal. Size - 7 x 13 x 3". Texture - cold, smooth, handle rough, knobly silver part.

Scissors; made out of - steel and plastic. Size - 3 x 6.5". Texture - sharp, smoot, a bit rough plastic yet smooth.

Screwdriver; made out of - rubber, plastic, metal. Size - 1.7 x 8.5. Texture - bumpy, rough, edgy, smooth, sharp.

String; made out of - wool. Size - 2.5 x 32". Texture - itchy, rough, hard, furry.

Sponge; made out of - sponge. Size - 5 x 5 x 2". Texture - very rough on top, smooth on bottom, squidgy, ditches.

Sweets wrapper; made out of - plastic foil. Size -3.7 x 4". Texture - crinkly, rough, smooth in some parts, shiny, bendy sharp at corner and sides.

Pick one of these 10 pictures. Look at the information about it. Without reading the title of what the object is, draw a picture using all of the desciption to create a new object. Take a picture of the drawing or scan it.

Linda - We start an apprenticeship by coming up with techniques for mobiles. We will create a journey by giving each other steps of what to do. At the end we will tell each other to take a picture of our finished product and see how well we could follow the steps. Hopefully it will end up steady and fixed together well. I think we need to do some work on the ideas that we need to explore.
